On Saturday, May 15, the opening ceremony and first session for the Challenged Program Vol. 3 of the Kobe Sweets Consortium in Tokyo were held. Attending as a special guest for the ceremony was Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications, Mr. Kazuhiro Haraguchi.

Developing resolutions to difficult employment situations and supporting work skills.

Employment opportunities for people with disabilities have been significantly affected due to the economy crisis. However, some efforts to progress the development of work skills for people with disabilities have continued. One such program that exists does not provide employment for the challenged but instead helps them to improve their vocational skills by providing facilities and know-how through sponsoring corporations and support through the efforts of professionals.

Professional chefs introduce people with disabilities to pastry making

The Kobe Sweets Consortium in Tokyo was held in Chuo-ku, Tokyo this month. This was a direct training program taught by first-class-pastry chefs for people with disabilities who have future aspirations of becoming professional confectioners. The participants watched professional pastry making techniques with dreams of becoming great pastry chefs.

Pursuing self-reliance with sweets---training the handicapped to be patissiers [July 3, 2009]
A gathering took place in Tokyo to train people with disabilities to be patissiers. Top patissiers at popular sweets shops instructed the handicapped. Those who took part in the event were eager to learn skills to make tasty sweets. We report on the status quo of the disabled in Japan and their struggle for self-reliance.
